Building and construction faces a tough time as pace slackens | Building Services | Scoop.it

After the heady days of the mining investment boom, this is a difficult time for those involved in the building and construction (B&C) industry. It faces significant cyclical shifts in the context of an overall decline. Nevertheless, some sectors will do well as others decline. Just as some regions will do well as others decline.

Time to Recognise the Importance of Australia’s Construction Industry

Time to Recognise the Importance of Australia’s Construction Industry | Building Services | Scoop.it

In a race to the bottom to talk down Australia’s construction industry through exaggerated concerns about housing oversupply and downward pressure on prices, together with over-generalisation of the weakness in non-residential construction, much of the analysis in 2016 to date does our industry a grave disservice.

Prisons become a new $3.8bn building boom | Building Services | Scoop.it

Forget luxury apartments, prisons are primed become the latest residential building boom in New South Wales after the Baird Government announced it will spend $3.8 billion to create 7000 extra ‘beds’ for the state’s soaring inmate population that has pushed existing facilities to breaking point.

Current Issues in the Building Industry

Current Issues in the Building Industry | Building Services | Scoop.it

The issue has the real potential to affect project quality, timeliness and efficiency, resulting in cost blow-outs and the potential for disputes to arise. The causes are multifaceted and complex, and much has been written about them. What I will say however is that the search for a solution or solutions is critical and one hopes this search will not be adversely affected by whoever ends up in government on or after July 2.

Four Emissions Reducing Building Technologies

Four Emissions Reducing Building Technologies | Building Services | Scoop.it

Australia has signed up to the Paris climate agreement, pledging to reduce our net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. With buildings producing one fifth of Australia’s carbon emissions, it’s obvious that a reduction in emissions from the building sector will go a long way towards meeting these obligations.

Australia is a highly urbanised society. Many of us spend large amounts of our time in homes, offices, and schools, so better buildings means a better quality of life for all of us. Research shows that low carbon buildings are better places to live, work, and learn. Lower costs for light, heat, and cooling also improve life for the poorest in our society.

Building for Efficiency Is Big Business

Building for Efficiency Is Big Business | Building Services | Scoop.it

The recent Green Buildings Day in Melbourne, hosted by the Green Building Council of Australia, showed how building with efficiency in mind is taking a larger piece of the construction pie.

The human element has returned to design. In the age of plant and technology, we somehow came to forget what buildings were for in the first place – to serve people. As NABERS national program manager Carlos Flores noted, we’ve forgotten that the point of all this work isn’t just about saving energy, but serving the purpose of the building better.

Our built environment is currently the world's single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, consuming one third of our water and generating 40 per cent of our waste.

It is nearly 20 years since the Property Council of Australia first started advocating for the establishment of a national, not-for-profit organisation to drive the adoption of green building practices and the integration of green building initiatives into the mainstream design, construction and operation of our built environment.

Smart buildings monitor energy efficiency, but what are they really tracking? | Building Services | Scoop.it

Imagine walking into your office, being welcomed by name as you walk through security, handed a coffee exactly as you like it and directed to a free quiet space that has the ideal comfort setting for the report you have to write that morning. Sound too good to be true? Maybe not, according to Preeti Bajaj, vice-president of strategy and transformation at the French multinational Schneider Electric.

The age of the smart building is upon us, Bajaj argues in a new report, Activate to Collaborate: the evolution of the smart office, and scenarios such as the one described could soon become commonplace as businesses look to make their office spaces smarter, more efficient and more people friendly.
